Scrabble Tournament

The Scrabble Tournament is an event we hold each year to raise money to support our literacy programs. Team Scrabble is a little different from individual Scrabble in that teams work with all the tiles simultaneously to fill the scrabble board. In one round, extra letters may be purchased. Companies buy tables of eight and enter their employees to compete with other companies for the championship. In addition, some donors prefer to sponsor one tutor or student player, at $50 each. Or, supporters can come for $30 just for the hors d’oeuvres and to show support. A silent auction is held for participants to enjoy during the event.

International Literacy Day: September 8

The mayor of the City of Corpus Christi read a proclamation On Sept. 11, 2007. A few days earlier, on Sept. 6, The Literacy Council presented a Literacy Day award to American Bank, for their continued support of literacy and other events that make this a better community.

Bridges to Practice: a Workshop about Learning Disabilities in Adults

Bridges to Practice training team is available for Corpus Christi on

Friday July 13 (6-9pm),

Friday July 20 (6-9pm) and

Saturday July 21 (9-4pm).

This training event will be a total of 12 hours. Participants need to come to all components.

This in-depth workshop is designed to equip programs to meet the challenges of adult students with special needs, especially learning disabilities. It covers legal issues, assessment, teaching methods and much more. Each participant earns a certificate of completion and leaves with a binder of resources.

Josh Hayes and Cheryl Parker will be the Bridges to Practice trainers in Corpus Christi.

Cheryl works in Dallas with Literacy Instruction for Texas. She is a certified Master Trainer for Bridges to Practice with the National Institute for Literacy.

Bowling Tournament

Over twenty teams bowled to raise funds for literacy on July 29, 2007. Your next chance to form a team will be on July 27, 2008! Challenge your competitors!

Adults unable to speak English are taught survival English, as well as how to read and write English, by a volunteer tutor or classroom instruction.

Basic Literacy

Adults are taught to read and write English from entry level through fifth grade. The program is available year-round through one-on-one tutoring or classroom instruction.
