Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Tutoring
Volunteer Now!
FOUR GOOD REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOLUNTEER
It’s a Rewarding Experience
You’ll find teaching another person how to read and speak the English language one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. You’ll see your student’s eyes twinkle as they learn new things. You’ll share a laugh or a tear as you and your student reach a break-through of understanding that was previously an obstacle. You’ll gain a new appreciation for your own grasp of our language and the ability to read, something you probably take for granted right now! You’ll discover a close, special new friendship as your student grows on this journey of knowledge you will travel together.
Community Involvement
The Corpus Christi Literacy Council is a not-for-profit organization located in the Greenwood Library, 4044 Greenwood. Since 1986, we have tutored over 3,000 students throughout the Corpus Christi Bay Area and South Texas.
Support for Tutors
The Corpus Christi Literacy Council supports its tutors in several ways. Tutor support groups meet every six weeks and, of course, there’s the annual tutor conference. In addition to everyday help and support from the Council’s staff, all tutors receive periodic updates, articles, and helpful hints.
There are several online sources for help for tutors. Here is a hint from a colleague:
“How many tutors have a background in phonics/decoding instruction? To teach
them can be difficult and tedious. Try this www.phonicstraining.com
It is something worth checking out – and it’s FREE” (for a month). Tyson Smith

Agency Support
We offer basic literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) training. After taking the training, you are matched with a student and work one-on-one with that student for one to one and a half hours, twice a week. Students and tutors are matched in close geographical proximity so it’s easy to get together for a lesson. Currently we have more than 80 tutoring sites across Corpus Christi. Our regular office hours are 8AM-5PM, Monday through Thursday, and 8AM-4PM on Friday. There is an answering machine for after-hours calls. The phone number is 361-857-5896.
Volunteer Now! Periodically we include the times and dates of training for new tutors in Happening NOW. We often have openings for volunteers in office work, computer updates, fundraising events, and much more.
